About the Item

A modernist tea or coffee service, designed in the early 1920s by Chris van der Hoef. At the time a very radical avantgarde design. With its bold geometric forms and pure, spherical volumes, the design reflects the progressive ideals of the Bauhaus and early modernist movements. Nearly a century later, it retains a remarkably fresh and stylish presence - nice accent piece in a contemporary interior. It combines perfectly with modernist and avantgarde interiors, as illustrated with some of the pictures. The service consists of a teapot, sugar bowl, and milk jug, all crafted in a harmonious spherical form with sharply angular spouts and handles that create a dynamic contrast. The handles are made of Bakelite, an innovative material of the era, further underscoring the modernist approach. Condition is very good, there is some light surface wear consistent with age and use. All pieces are marked with monogrammes and the GERO stamp underneath. This design is well-documented in period publications and is also illustrated in the Dutch valuation reference Art Deco and Art Nouveau (part II) by R. Zeegers, confirming its significance in the history of Art Deco and modernist design.
