About the Item

This is a beautiful teacup and saucer made by Coalport in 1831. It was made in the famous "Adelaide" shape and was superbly hand painted with landscape scenes. I have three of these available Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th century and brought out many iconic designs. This cup was made in the late Regency period, which was the period of the Rococo Revival. It would have belonged to a large tea and coffee service and it would have shared its saucer with a narrower coffee cup, however it got separated from the rest of the service. The shape of this cup is called "Adelaide", after the much-loved Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV and beloved auntie of Queen Victoria, who succeeded William in 1837. Adelaide was known to be a good and amiable person who had a positive influence on her husband King William, who was known to be a difficult person who was not endowed with the necessary diplomatic skills for a King. She also was a loving aunt to Victoria, who had an otherwise rather loveless childhood, so it only made sense that Coalport honoured Queen Victoria's ascent to the throne with a porcelain shape named after her favourite aunt. The decoration consists of many factors: there is the fine moulding on the surface of the items, the warm grey ground colour, the lavish and graceful gilding that plays on the moulded surface, and of course, most stunningly, the exceptionally beautiful hand painted landscapes showing one with a river and a bridge, and one with two figures walking in autumnal mountains. This cup would have belonged to a very high-end tea service and it is wonderful by itself. Condition report: The set is in excellent antique condition with no damage, crazing or repairs. There are some tiny pock marks in the glaze on the outside of the cup (see picture); this is a small production flaw and should not be seen as damage. The items are unmarked, as was often the case with items of this period, but they have the hand painted pattern number 2/688, which dates the items to the year 1831. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
