Provenance: Acquired from J. Rochelle Thomas, London, 1935, by Lucy Truman Alrdrich (the 18th century teawares).* Estate of Lucy T. Aldrich, bequest to David Rockefeller, 1955 (the 18th century teawares). This exquisite Chamberlains Worcester tea set, featuring the Dragons in Compartments pattern, is part of the esteemed David and Peggy Rockefeller Collection. Crafted around 1800, this exceptional set showcases the iconic Dragons in Compartments design, also known as the Bengal Tiger pattern. The set is a fine example of English porcelain influenced by Chinese export wares from the Kangxi period. It features a blend of mythical creatures and classical floral motifs. Key Features: Pattern Details: The design includes four gilt-edged, lozenge-shaped panels that alternate between mythical beasts and vases set on a table. A wide border decorated with green and orange floral patterns surrounds these panels. The tea set exemplifies the sophistication of early 19th-century English porcelain design and craftsmanship. Provenance: It is part of the prestigious David and Peggy Rockefeller Collection. Marks: The teapot cover and sugar box bear the "Chamberlains Worcester Warranted" mark, which was used from 1786 to 1810 (see images). Background of Chamberlains Worcester: Robert and Humphrey Chamberlain established their porcelain factory in Worcester in 1793 after successfully decorating and gilding porcelain from the original Worcester factory. During the Regency Period, Chamberlains Worcester enjoyed royal patronage. The factory gained fame for its artistry, producing many patterns inspired by 18th-century Japanese and Chinese wares.
