ABOUT ARTIST Gunnar Havstad (1901 – 1973) was a Norwegian sculptor, tinsmith (metalworker), designer and author best known for his innovative work in pewter and tin design, blending artistic form with functional objects throughout the mid-20th century. Educated in sculpture and fine arts, studying under noted sculptor Carl Milles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Although trained as a sculptor, he became particularly influential for his work with pewter and tin, elevating these materials into the realm of modern design. In 1928, he founded his own studio and workshop, Havstad, in Nesodden, Norway. With just a small team, this studio eventually became the oldest pewter factory in Norway. His designs were known for blending material honesty, modernist lines, and functional utility, often incorporating pewter, tin, brass, wood, and leather. He also wrote and engaged in broader artistic pursuits beyond metalwork. Havstad’s work spans a range of decorative and functional objects, often in Scandinavian Modern or Modernist style, including: Pewter vessels and bottles often with architectural or sculptural qualities. Pitchers and decanters featuring clean, geometric lines typical of mid-century design. Iconic pieces like the "Jomfruen" (The Virgin) pewter wine pitcher from the early 1930s, celebrated for its elegant, conical form. His pieces are collectible today and appear in vintage and design markets, often reflecting 20th-century Scandinavian and mid-century modern aesthetics. Havstad reinvigorated tin and pewter as materials for modern design in Norway, moving beyond traditional craft forms into functional art and modern decorative objects. His studio and designs maintained influence after his death; the workshop continued under his son Sveinung Havstad, maintaining the brand for decades. Today, his works are sought by collectors of Scandinavian modern decorative arts and metal design.
