About the Item
Charming Late 1940s Dachshund Porcelain Teapot, Gold Crown E
R, Western Germany
A delightful and highly collectible porcelain dachshund teapot, made in Western Germany in the late 1940s and marked with the Gold Crown E
R label. This whimsical piece is both functional and decorative, capturing the postwar German tradition of finely detailed animal porcelain in a charming and memorable form.
Shaped as a seated dachshund, the teapot features beautiful coloration, ranging from warm light brown tones to deep black accents, giving the figure a lifelike presence. The dog wears a small collar around its neck, cleverly disguising the opening for the lid. The tail forms the handle, sweeping upward in a graceful curve, while the dachshund’s eager expression and alert stance give him undeniable personality and presence. He truly looks as though he is waiting politely to serve.
The piece retains its original “Gold Crown E
R Western Germany” foil label, and the underside carries a mold number along with a stamped “Western Germany” mark, both confirming its mid-20th-century origin.
During the 1930s and 40s, Germany had a flourishing ceramic and porcelain industry specializing in realistic animal forms, often created for decorative household use. These pieces were admired for their craftsmanship, hand-finishing, and charming character, and dachshunds, beloved German icons, became especially popular subjects. Such objects were often sold in fine gift shops and exported widely after World War II, offering a touch of European whimsy and artistry to homes abroad.
E
R (Ernst Wahl
Riegermann) was an American importing company that, after the war, brought high-quality porcelain from Western Germany to the U.S. Their Gold Crown mark became known for superior craftsmanship and appealing decorative pieces, from figurines to tableware. Today, E
R pieces are sought after by collectors who appreciate midcentury European porcelain with strong character and charm.
Complete with its original label, excellent sculptural detail, and expressive styling, this dachshund teapot stands out as both a charming display object and a wonderful functional conversation piece.
A warm and humorous addition to any kitchen, breakfast nook, or canine lover’s collection, and a lovely example of postwar German porcelain craftsmanship at its most endearing.
