About the Item

This is a gorgeous full tea service serving six made by Miles Mason circa 1810, which was the Regency era. The items are decorated with the famous Pagoda pattern in blue and white transfer and a gracious gilt detail. This service has provenance, you can see from the small labels on the underside of most items that it came from the collection of Peter Stovin, a porcelain expert who has written extensively about British porcelain. Miles Mason was one of the early ones of the second wave of British porcelain makers, alongside Spode and others. Mason was a prominent porcelain retailer in London at the time that most porcelain came from China, imported by the East India Company. When those imports stopped in 1791 (due to the racketeering at the porcelain auctions by Mason and his fellow dealers), he seized the opportunity and started to experiment in making his own porcelain. By the early 1800s, Mason had developed both very strong ironstone, and bone china. Mason copied the Chinese designs he used to import, and became famous for large Chinoiserie dinner and dessert wares made of "Patent Ironstone". However, they also made very fine porcelain tea services. This set is made of bone china, which points to production after circa 1805. The teacups are bowls, as was still popular among the more conservative public who were used to the Chinese tea bowls. However, the teapot is from circa 1810 and is made in the fashionable oval shape. The whole set is decorated in the famous Pagoda pattern with a gracious gilt detail. The pattern is applied in transfer print. The Pagoda pattern is a copy of a popular Chinese pattern, Spode turned this into the famous Willow pattern. The set is unmarked as was common at the time, except the pattern number 214. This service is good for use, it is incredibly rare to find a whole tea service from this period that is still in such excellent condition. Condition report: The set is in very good antique condition without any major flaws, and it is good for use. There are no chips or cracks. However, most items have some crazing, particularly the cups and saucers, some of this has led to some light staining. The teapot spout is in good condition but has some minor scrapes, however it is good for use and the inside of the pot is without any cracks or major stains. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye, a glazing line is a break in the glazing only, hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.

This is a porcelain blue and white, hand gilded Sucrier (Sugar Bowl) in the Broseley printed pattern made by Miles Mason (Mason's), Staffordshire Potteries, in the early 19th century, circa 1810. This is a beautiful orphaned teacup made by Spode in about 1810. It bears a lavish Japanese-inspired Imari pattern. Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own designs. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. Spode porcelain is regarded as one of the highest quality porcelains around; for a soft-paste porcelain it is surprisingly hard and fine, and has a wonderful bright white colour. The pattern on this can is called "Dollar" pattern, a very famous pattern that was used by English potters in the 18th and early 19th Century. It is obvious why it is called “dollar” - but its origin is less obvious! It is thought that this pattern was derived from a very old Chinese pattern depicting a tree with elaborate foliage that hides a Chinese character representing longevity or happiness.
