This is a stunning tea or coffee service mostly made by New Hall in about 1815. The coffee pot with stand, which are absolutely stunning and very rare, and the sucrier are from an unknown Staffordshire maker, but clearly from the same period and in the same style, and were probably matched with the New Hall service from the date of first purchase. The service is decorated with the famous "black infants" pattern, which is a bat-printed after Adam Buck prints. The service consists of a tea or coffee pot with cover and stand, a sucrier with cover, a milk jug, a slop bowl, and seven cups and saucers. The New Hall factory started as a cooperative of several Staffordshire potters making use of the porcelain license of Bristol Porcelain Company after this went in demise. It quickly grew out to be a leading porcelain maker, and the first to make true porcelain in Staffordshire. New Hall served especially the less wealthy middle classes and therefore made a phenomenal amount of modest yet elegant tableware, like this tea service. This service has teacups but a coffee pot, but of course you can use it for either tea or coffee as all items are suitable to both. The coffee pot and the sucrier have a different pattern number from the rest of the service, but all have the same type of images. These are depictions of the Muses, Ages and the Cardinal Values and are after the famous prints by Adam Buck that have been used a lot for porcelain designs. The images are "bat printed", which has nothing to do with bats (the animals) but stands for the particular way transfer prints were generally only done for about 10 years, roughly between 1810 and 1820. It was a form of transfer printing by which an etched picture was transferred not by a sheet of paper, but by a slab of gelatine called a “bat”, which would transfer sticky oil onto the porcelain object, which was then covered in powdered paint. The paint would stick to the oil print of the original etching and that’s how the picture emerged. Another difference is that the etching itself was not scratched into the copper plate, but stippled; this created the soft tones. Even though the decorations come out in monochrome, they tend to have more subtlety and emotional expression than transfer prints or even hand painted decorations. Bat printing was very time consuming and could not cover large areas, so it was not done on a large scale and didn't survive long beyond the early 19th Century. The images on this service are the Cardinal Values: Temperance (a woman and child with a chariot, the woman being bridled by the child) and Fortitude (a woman and child playing badminton); the following Muses: Study (a woman and child writing at a desk); Memory (a woman testing a child while keeping a book just out of sight); The Proclaimer (a woman orating from a scroll); and Song (a woman playing the lyre, a woman and child playing the harp, and the piano); and, finally, the Ages: childhood (a baby playing with a tambourine held up by a woman, another one of a woman and child with a play horse); adult life (a scene of two young parents and a child in what seems to be an intimate conversation) and old age (an old man under a tree). The items are unmarked, as is customary for New Hall, apart from the pattern number 1109 on the pot and the sucrier, and 462 on some of the other items. Condition report The service is in good condition with some flaws, but it is good for use. The tea or coffee pot has a faint crack in spout, but is still good for use. The cover of the pot is crazed. The stand has two cracks on the rim and is crazed. The sucrier has a large chip on the inner lip, which is not visible when the lid is in position; there are star cracks in the wall and the base but the sucrier is stable. The milk jug has staple and oldfashioned render repairs on the mouth and the handle but is still OK to use for (cold) milk. Of the saucers, one has a faint star crack in the rim and unfortunately 6 have the images completely faded. The teacups are in great condition. Overall the whole set is good for careful use and it looks stunning on display. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1700s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
