About the Item

This is a stunning coffee service made in the Empire style by a Paris factory in circa 1820. All items are decorated with a beautiful emerald green ground, flower posies and gilt. There were many porcelain factories in early 19th century Paris, and just as many decorating studios. Often items were made in a factory and then decorated in a studio, but most did not sign their works so we don't know who exactly made this service. The porcelain is of the highest quality, as is the craftsmanship. This coffee service consists of a large coffee pot with cover, a large sucrier with cover, a large slop bow, and six narrow cups and saucers. They all bear a proud Empire design, you can hear the Marseillaise play in the background!! The set is perfect for coffee; the narrow, high shape of the items will preserve the coffee fragrance. Each item is decorated in a beautiful deep emerald green ground with hand painted flower posies in panels; there is lavish gilding throughout. All items are unmarked, as was common at the time. Condition report: The service is in structurally perfect condition without any damage, crazing or repairs. There is some gilt loss throughout as visible in the pictures, but the ground color and the flower posies are fresh and undamaged. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera, I try to be as accurate as I can. Dimensions: Coffee pot 27cm (10.5") high, 22cm (8.75") wide incl. handles; sucrier 21cm X 12cm (8.25" x 4.75"); slop bowl 20cm (8") wide and 9cm (3.5") high; cups 7.25cm (2.8") high and 8cm (3.25") diameter; saucers 13.25cm (5.5") diameter.
