About the Item

A rare Georgian English salt glazed panel teapot decorated with Bacchus masks by renowned maker Wedgwood and dating from around 1760. The small sized white stoneware teapot stands on a narrow hexagonal shaped base with a similar shaped lower body made up of diamond shape panels molded with a central Bacchus-like face within a Gothic style window surround. The upper body is rounder with a wide funnel shaped top opening with acanthus styled designs set between simple floral embellished panels forming the upper body. A flat top molded and shaped handle is applied to one side and a molded short raised decorative pouring spout to the opposite side. The teapot has a domed cover with similar decorative paneling and with a raised central seed pod finial. The inner teapot incorporates an integral tea leaf sieve the large holes indicating that tea was probably less refined at this time. Although uncommon the teapot does bear an impressed WEDGWOOD makers mark to the base and has a natural salt glazed finish to the body. A stunning and rare example. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market The teapot is offered in good original condition with some natural firing flaws and wear associated with age and use. With some glaze rubbing to the tips of the finial.
