About the Item

Haviland Limoges cup and saucer set was made of thin, semi-translucent porcelain and hand decorated in delicate gold, dark red, and pale grey palette. Gold outlines were used to enhance the complex cup and saucer shapes in a manner reminiscent of Schleiger 420 pattern. Arts and Crafts style abstract geometric designs were used on inner rim of the cup and on the saucer, and vignettes of branches with flowers were placed in the centers of both the cup and the saucer as transfers, hand-painted with pale grey and gold inside dark red outlines, and adorned with white enamel accents to create texture and add complexity on otherwise restrained decoration. Both the cup and the saucer are marked with green underglaze factory mark "H&C/L", dating back to 1876-1889, and red overglaze decorator mark "Haviland &C Limoges". dating back to 1893-1931. As the pieces were factory decorated, the undecorated blanks must have been made at earlier date and stored for some time before being decorated and distributed in 1890s. The set is a rare and exciting example of European Arts and Crafts design and early Haviland craftsmanship. Thin-walled cup with partially translucent relief decor changes color and overall appearance depending on the color of the liquid in it, enriching a simple process of drinking tea or coffee with beauty and intimate aesthetic qualities. The cup is 2.1" tall with 3.2" diameter opening; the saucer is 5.2" in diameter with sides that are 1" tall. The set is in excellent antique condition.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Pair of Porcelain Cups Saucers, France 1894-1931
By Haviland Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 2 demitasse cups and 2 saucers was made by Haviland Cie in Limoges, France. The Art Deco style form of a footed cups, with 3 small ball feet, is rather rare and hard to find, especially in coffee or demitasse size. In this set the pieces were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Victorian style motif of pink English roses. Calm light pink and green colors are accentuated by bright gold rims and gold trim on handles and ball feet; crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain showcases the soft, delicate decor without overpowering it. The pieces are marked with green underglaze manufacturer mark Haviland France that dates to 1894-1931. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...

Haviland Limoges Butterfly Handled Cup and saucer set, 1879-1889, Aesthetic
By Haviland Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Cup and saucer set by Haviland Cie is decorated in Aesthetic style, combining elements of 3 different patterns. Meadow Visitors butterflies, placed between Bracquemond style sprays of pink roses and blue cornflowers, are accentuated with grey and gold medallions in abstract design. The butterflies and roses are decorated with raised enamel accents, and the butterfly shaped handle is outlined with delicate gold veins, tracing the wing pattern. The cup is 2.12" tall and 3.5" wide at the rim; the saucer is 5.65" in diameter. Set uses butterfly handled blank that was in production for relatively short time; factory decorated pieces are rather rare due to limited supply and fragility of the cups. This set is marked with the blue donut-shaped decorator mark, used in 1879-1889, on both cup and saucer, and underglaze green manufacturer marks: H&C on the cup, dating it 1876-1879, and H&C/L on the saucer, dating it 1876-1889. Examples of similar decorations, utilizing abstract border designs instead of medallions on china with Meadow Visitors decor, can be seen in Haviland China...
