About the Item

This is an exceptionally beautiful Ridgway trio made circa 1825, which is known as the Regency period. The shape of the cup handle is typical for its time and is called the "London" shape. In the late 18th and early 19th century, teacups and coffee cups shared one saucer - you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, so why invest in an extra saucer? Ridgway was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea and dinner wares are often underestimated. This tea set is unmarked, as most Ridgway items, but the reason we know it was made by Ridgway is the pattern number, as well as the way it was potted; Ridgway made items as elegant as Spode, but usually it was potted a bit thicker. The decoration of the cup and saucer are stunning in their colours: deep cobalt blue with rich gilding and beautiful flower posies set in white panels. What is interesting about this pattern is the combination of very English flowers such as roses, peonies, violets and tulips, and a gilt border that includes Chinese keys; a wonderful combination of styles. As rooms were lit by candles at the time, you can imagine the flickering light being reflected in the lavish gilt - one important reason to use so much gilt on table ware. This pattern has been used by different makers; I have seen it on Yates, New Hall and Ridgway items, each time with different pattern numbers. I recently sold a Ridgway teacup and saucer with exactly the same pattern but it had the number 2/1126. We don't know whether this pattern simply travelled with an artist who worked for various factories, the factories were imitating each other, or perhaps they made replacement items for each other. Condition report: The items are in excellent antique condition without any damage, crazing or repairs. There is very minimal wear, as is visible in the pictures. There is a little bit of kiln dust on the glaze here and there, particularly on the inside of the teacup handle. This is from production and should not be seen as damage or wear. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can also have small firing lines. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you might see some. Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. This is a beautiful orphaned teacup made by Spode in about 1810. It bears a lavish Japanese-inspired Imari pattern. Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own designs. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. Spode porcelain is regarded as one of the highest quality porcelains around; for a soft-paste porcelain it is surprisingly hard and fine, and has a wonderful bright white colour. The pattern on this can is called "Dollar" pattern, a very famous pattern that was used by English potters in the 18th and early 19th Century. It is obvious why it is called “dollar” - but its origin is less obvious! It is thought that this pattern was derived from a very old Chinese pattern depicting a tree with elaborate foliage that hides a Chinese character representing longevity or happiness.
