About the Item

This is a beautifully decorated coffee cup and saucer made by Samuel Alcock, circa 1820. The cup is decorated in a style that closely resembles that of the Welsh Swansea factory, which was very popular at the time. Samuel Alcock was one of the many potters in Staffordshire such as Spode, Coalport, H&R Daniel and many others during the 1830s and 1840s. Alcock spent his formative years working for the great Spode pottery and then set out to start his own factory. He was perhaps not the most well-known of potters but produced some very high quality wares and original designs, often standing out for their bright choice of colours and beautiful shapes. Alcock wares are often confused with Spode, H R Daniel and Coalport; Alcock was of course trained at Spode, then became H&R Daniel's main peer and rival, and Coalport and Alcock often imitated each other. The set is finely potted in beautiful milky white porcelain. The pattern resembles the style of the Welsh Swansea and Nantgarw factories. Welsh porcelain belonged to the most treasured porcelain in those years so many makers in Staffordshire would poach the artists and copy the style. The main decoration consists of beautifully painted flower posies, and there is a simple gold band along the rims. The simplicity of the items make the flowers stand out in their elegance. The cup and saucer are not marked. Condition report: The set is in excellent condition without any damage or repairs. Both items have fine crazing, which is hard to see but causes them not to ring when tapped. There is no discolouration. There is very little wear but the gilt bands are a little rubbed in places, as is visible on the pictures. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
