About the Item

This beautiful 19th-century French faience tureen with its matching underplate is a striking example of traditional blue-and-white earthenware, entirely hand-painted and full of character. The set features a lively cobalt-blue palette on a warm, creamy white glaze, decorated with delicate floral motifs and a stylised long-tailed bird, a theme typical of provincial French production inspired by Nevers and early Rouen wares. The tureen’s elegant silhouette includes scroll-shaped handles, a gently undulating rim, and a sculptural lid with a looped finial, giving the piece a refined yet rustic presence. The matching platter mirrors the same flowing decoration, with softly scalloped edges and a beautifully detailed central bird motif. Both pieces display the expected craquelure of antique faience, adding depth and authenticity to the surface. Minor glaze imperfections, small firing marks, and tiny edge nibbles are consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship and use. The underside bears a hand-painted mark, typical of regional workshops of the period. Whether used as a table centerpiece, displayed on a dresser, or added to a collection of French faience, this tureen brings charm, colour, and historic appeal to any interior.
