About the Item
This is a Thai Benjarong porcelain soup tureen. This type of ware is a traditional Thai craft known for its intricate, hand-painted designs using multi-colored enamels and real gold accents. It is made from Thai bone china or high-fired porcelain.
The term "Benjarong" literally means "five colors," but pieces typically feature anywhere from three to eight colors along with lavish gold detailing. It's decorated with repetitive, symmetrical motifs like the floral patterns seen here, which are applied as a relief glaze, giving the paint a slightly raised, three-dimensional look.
This porcelain style has origins in Ming Dynasty China but was developed into a distinct Thai art form, once exclusively reserved for the Thai royal court and aristocracy.
