About the Item
Federal Elegance: Chinese Export Soup Tureen for the American Market
This impressive Chinese Export Porcelain Soup Tureen with Cover and Stand dates to Circa 1780, a period marking the establishment of direct trade between China and the newly formed United States. The set features a bombe-form tureen and a complementary oval stand.
The decoration is distinguished by its primary motif: an ornamental blue enamel and gilt basket of flowers, which appears prominently on the front and back of the tureen, as well as on the cover and the center of the stand.
Key decorative details include:
Shoulder
Stand Border: A narrow band of gilt chain on an orange ground encircles the tureen's shoulder and the rim of the stand.
Scattered Sprigs: The body of the tureen and the border of the stand are further decorated with charming groupings of Famille Rose flowers and fruit (e.g., small berries and blooms).
Finial: The cover is topped with a finely modeled flowerhead finial.
Dimensions: 10 inches high x 12 inches wide x 9 inches deep.
Condition: The set is in good antique condition. There is some crazing on the stand and gilt rubbing on the crown of the flowerhead finial, both consistent with age. There is no repair.
Historical Context: Porcelain and the American Trade
Post-Revolutionary Commerce
This tureen set was created specifically for the American market, representing one of the earliest waves of direct trade following the American Revolutionary War. After gaining independence, American merchants, no longer constrained by British trade laws, quickly entered the lucrative China Trade. The first American vessel to sail to Canton, the Empress of China, arrived in 1784.
The Taste of the New Republic
Sets like this were commissioned by wealthy American merchant families and statesmen of the Federal Period. While much American Export porcelain bore armorials or initials, this design, featuring a central floral basket in blue enamel and gilding, was highly fashionable.
Aesthetic: The design, with its blue and orange-red palette and gilt accents, offers a stately, neoclassical elegance favored in American dining rooms of the 1780s and 1790s.
Status: The soup tureen was a statement piece for the formal dining table, demonstrating the host's wealth and ability to acquire luxurious goods from across the globe—a clear marker of success in the new American republic.
