About the Item
Large 18th Century French Porcelain Soup Tureen and Stand Decorated with Cornflower Sprigs, Marked for "Monsieur"
This elegant 18th-century French porcelain soup tureen and stand is a fine example of the refined artistry of the Clignancourt manufactory.
This elegant 18th-century French porcelain soup tureen is hand-painted with delicate sprigs of red and blue cornflowers—known in French as barbeau—a motif famously favored by Queen Marie Antoinette for its graceful simplicity and natural charm.
The design is beautifully executed, with bands of intertwining cornflowers and foliage encircling the lid and body, all highlighted with subtle gilt detailing.
Scattered cornflower sprigs ornament the lower body and underplate, lending a sense of lightness and freshness to the composition.
This piece was produced under the royal patronage of Philippe de France, Duke of Orléans—brother of King Louis XVI and known at court as “Monsieur.”
Dimensions: 17" x 13" x 12.5" tall
Condition: Excellent
Price: $1,600
The underplate bears the factory mark “M,” in red, indicating this royal connection (see image).
The Clignancourt factory was celebrated for producing porcelain of the highest quality for the French aristocracy, and this tureen is a testament to its technical and artistic excellence.
The tureen makes a striking centerpiece on an oval dining table or sideboard.
For special occasions, it can also be filled with seasonal flowers.
This tureen is a functional serving piece and also a collector’s item that embodies the elegance and opulence of 18th-century French court life.
