About the Item

Rare Chrysanthemum sterling silver soup tureen. Made by Tiffany Co. in New York. Lobed and oval bowl with scalloped and turned down scalloped rim. Bracket end handles and four splayed volute supports. Cover double domed with bracket finial. Dense and textural cast ornament in form of alternating flower heads and leaves applied to rim and cover shoulder. With dense profusion of same applied to feet and wrapped and mounted to handles. A big, drool-inducing centerpiece made soon after this historic Japonesque pattern was introduced in 1880. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, pattern no. 5712, director’s letter M (1873-91), and volume (5 1/2 qts). Heavy weight: 135 troy ounces.

A very fine impressively large silver plated soup tureen by Elkington Company of London with a capacity to hold 4 quarts. The substantial oval body having open handles, richly decorated with embossed engraved foliate motifs centered by blank foliate cartouches, the conforming lid bearing engraved heraldic crests. Raised overall upon a stepped oval foot, with the underside bearing impressed factory marks for Elkington Co., together with date letter for 1884. In extremely good overall condition, and priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace. ELKINGTON COMPANY: George Richards Elkington Henry Elkington were the first to discover and patent the silver plating process in the 1830's.
