About the Item
French Ceramic “Bouillabaisse” Fish or Shellfish Tureen by Paulette Bailet, Saint-Jean-du-Désert, Marseille, Late 1940s
A rare and beautifully crafted French ceramic tureen titled “Bouillabaisse” by Paulette Bailet for the Faïencerie d’Art de Saint-Jean-du-Désert, Marseille, dating from the late 1940s.
This exceptional hand-painted faience piece celebrates the culinary and artistic heritage of the South of France. The tureen can be used for traditional fish or shellfish preparations, complete with juice or soup. It comprises:
1 tray
1 bowl
1 drainer and fish warmer
1 lid
The tureen rests on a sculptural base formed by four fish, while the sides are richly decorated by hand with marine-inspired motifs. It features four shell-shaped handles and a lobster-shaped lid handle, adding whimsical charm to its refined craftsmanship.

Marks: Stamped “SJD Faïencerie d’Art de St-Jean-du-Désert Marseille” under the base (see photo) and signed by the artist.
