About the Item

Spode Porcelain Japan-pattern Soup Tureen and Cover, Rock Tree Pattern, Bone China, Pattern 1741, Circa 1811-20 This exceptional Spode bone china soup tureen and cover, pattern number 1741, presents a vibrant "Rock Tree" design, a variation of the Imari style introduced by Spode in 1811. The piece features a light blue ground from which a dark blue flowering tree ascends, accompanied by stylised polychrome botanical elements. The tureen base is adorned with alternating panels: one series exhibiting gilt foliate motifs and orange floral embellishments, and the other displaying a dark blue ground detailed with gilt leaves and orange and white flower heads. Correspondingly, the tureen cover exhibits similar panel decoration along its rim. The handles and finial are executed in gilt, fashioned in the form of serpents, adding a distinctive sculptural element. This meticulously hand-painted pattern reflects a direct emulation of 18th-century Oriental Export porcelain prototypes, demonstrating the period's fascination with and adaptation of Eastern decorative arts. Dimensions: 16.5 inches (width) x 9 inches (depth) x 9 inches (height). Mark: Spode/1741 in red script on base of the tureen. Reference: NY10752-lkmx)

Georgian Spode Stone China Sauce Tureen in Ship Pattern 3067, circa 1810
By Spode
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good sauce tureen made of ironstone (Spode's Stone China) in the Ship Pattern, No 3067, produced by the English, Spode factory early in the 19th century, George 111rd Period. The piece is well potted with two side handles. The pattern is called the Ship pattern number 3067, the chinoiserie decoration being transfer printed under-glaze, then very carefully hand-painted in bold colored enamels with additional gold gilding over-glaze. As is usual with Spode ware the standard of hand painted detail is very high. A plate in this pattern is shown on page 54 of Steven Smith's book; "Spode and Copeland" published by Schiffer. The pattern is in the Chinese taste as produced by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese Export porcelain from China. The piece has a mid brown edge similar to that often seen on Chinese plates. The piece is fully marked to the base, with the earlier Spode black printed Stone-China mark...
