About the Item

An English Silverplate Champagne Cooler, Early 20th Century Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Description: The stepped circular base to cylindrical body with rising curved handle on either side conforming to the elegant curvilinear rim. The ‘LR’ monogram over text reading ‘Louis Roederer Fonde en 1776’ engraved to both sides of the body, signify the cooler was distributed by the French champagne producer Louis Roederer, founded in Reims, France in 1776. The base stamps ‘JD S BP’ accompanied by a figural trademark depicting a desk bell, attribute the manufacture of the cooler to James Deakin Sons of Sheffield after 1886 and indicate the bucket is Britannia Plate, a type of silverplate composed of alloy of tin, antimony and copper, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
