About the Item

This impressive early 19th-century mahogany cellarette is crafted in the refined sarcophagus form associated with the late Georgian and Regency periods. Fashioned from richly figured mahogany, it features a beautifully faceted lid with a raised central panel, framed by finely carved reeded mouldings that continue around the entire body. The tapering sides rest on a substantial plinth base, also decorated with matching reeded detail, giving the piece a strong, architectural presence. Decorative carved shell-and-scroll handles enhance each end, adding both elegance and practicality. The hinged lid lifts to reveal the original zinc-lined interior, designed to hold wine bottles chilled on ice — a luxurious and practical feature for the period. Well-proportioned and increasingly scarce in this condition, this Georgian cellarette makes a striking statement today, ideal as a drinks cabinet, storage chest, or distinctive decorative feature in a traditional or eclectic interior.
