About the Item
An expressive German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) champagne cooler, attributed to WMF, circa 1900, featuring a powerful high-relief Bacchus mask framed by scrolling vines, grape clusters and fluid drapery. The dense repoussé modeling, sculptural face and robust foliate feet align closely with WMF’s turn-of-the-century vocabulary, favoring dramatic relief and architectural footing over the lighter, more sinuous French treatments of the period.
Executed in silver-plated metal, the vessel displays crisp chasing and a warm, even patina that accentuates depth and movement across the surface. Designed for service yet striking as a standalone centerpiece, it embodies the celebratory spirit of Belle Époque entertaining and the technical ambition of leading German silversmiths.
Unmarked, as seen on a number of period WMF productions, yet the form, construction and ornament strongly support the attribution.
