About the Item

This substantial sterling silver wine cistern and its stand were hallmarked in Birmingham in 1904, produced by the well known silversmiths Barker Brothers Ltd. The design features an oval, fluted body set upon a conforming base, with handles executed in a detailed acanthus leaf motif. The body and stand are further adorned with intricate cast and applied scrollwork. As a piece of significant scale, the cistern served to chill wine bottles for grand entertaining events, but would also work as a sculptural centrepiece when not full of ice and champagne bottles. This antique object stands as a notable example of Edwardian ceremonial silver, reflecting the high standards of production from the period. It represents a functional and historical artifact, an acquisition for a collection centered on fine English silver.
