Silver-Gilt Wine Coolers Louis Aucoc Circa 1870 The mid-19th century was a pinnacle of artistic innovation and technical mastery in the decorative arts, and these exceptional sterling silver-gilt wine coolers from Maison Aucoc Ainé epitomize this golden age. Monumental in scale and breathtaking in their intricacy, the pair showcases an opulent design inspired by the natural beauty of grapevines and branches, rendered with remarkable detail. Each two-handled cooler incorporates a removable ice compartment, seamlessly blending functionality with luxury to keep fine wine perfectly chilled. The gilded surfaces stand as a testament to the unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic vision that earned Aucoc its distinguished reputation. The Maison Aucoc was founded in 1821 by Louis Aucoc Aine as a silversmithing business at 154 Rue St. Honoré in Paris. In 1835, the business moved to Rue de la Paix, and in 1854, he retired and left his son Louis Aucoc in charge of the family firm. During his tenure, Aucoc added jewelry manufacturing to the already successful silver business with great success. The 1870s proved to be a time of great expansion for the company. Aucoc purchased the Maison Lobojois and consolidated both businesses to create La Maison Aucoc, where the legendary René Lalique apprenticed. Aucoc participated in the major international exhibitions of the day with some of the firm's grandest furniture and jewelry creations. The company earned royal appointments to King Charles X, King Louis-Philippe I and Napoleon III. The craftsmanship of these Second Empire coolers is comparable to the finest silver works exhibited at international expositions. Aucoc’s creations consistently captivated the world stage, garnering acclaim at events such as the Great Exhibition of 1851. Works from Louis Aucoc can be found in museums around the world, including the Musée d’Orsay. These exceptional antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a circular rounded form onto a circular spreading foot. Each body is embellished with a bright cut engraved shield shaped coat of arms depicting in-escutcheon firstly and fourthly a bugle Horn stringed between three crescents, secondly and thirdly a boar's head.
