A Nelson commemorative wine cooler by Davenport. This terracotta cooler is relief moulded with a portrait of Admiral Viscount Nelson, in full uniform and medals, between two acorn-bearing oak boughs on one side and a naval panoply on the reverse. The rim comprises tied reeds and twin dolphin-mask handles are attached to the sides. English, circa 1815. Two very similar examples from the collection of Horatio, third Lord Nelson, are illustrated in an article titled ‘Nelson Relics and Relic Hunters’ in The Windsor Magazine, Vol. XX. June-November 1904, p.519. (See also page 4.) A third with a paper label stating ‘Exceedingly rare (Lockett)’ was exhibited at the Hanley Museum, item No.1721 (see Britain on the High Seas, from Nelson to Churchill, p.71, Wick Antiques, 2019). John Davenport (1765-1848) trained as a potter with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke, Staffordshire in 1785. By 1794 he had founded his own pottery factory counting the Prince of Wales among his customers. A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver wine coolers, an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection. These magnificent antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a Classic Campania shaped form onto a knopped pedestal foot. The lower bulbous portion of each antique wine cooler is embellished with magnificent chased decoration displaying scrolling leaf designs orienting towards the central point. The surface of each body is embellished with the contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented by the Inhabitants of St Helena to Colonel Mark Wilks, late Governor of that Island, in Memorial of their Esteem, Respect & Gratitude, 1816' to one side. The other side of each piece features the contemporary flat engraved coat of arms depicting party per pale, to the Dexter three heraldic roses above a paly of 8, to the sinister a bend charged with three escallops between three lozenge to the chief and base. The aforementioned coat of arms is surmounted with the crest of a wolf rampant collared, all above the bannered motto 'Pro Rege' - For the King. The upper rim of each piece is encircled with a convex band ornamented with exceptional chased evolute spiraling foliate designs accented with floral motifs. Each antique wine cooler is fitted with an exceptional pair of cast handles embellished with scrolling leaf emanating towards a central knop. The impressive sockets of each handle are ornamented with a magnificent cast and applied Bacchanal style bearded mask design.
