About the Item

Jeweled walking stick in 18k gold. One side of the knob features the embossed image of a heron, whose body naturally adapts to the shape of the handle. The bird stands one-legged on a small rock resting on the collar ring. The band, handmade, is a beautiful execution of hanging flowers and swirling tendrils in Art Nouveau style. The Parisian firm Plisson and Hartz was known for the excellent quality of its Art Nouveau jewelry, characterized by the frequent use of animals, sea creatures and unusual chimerical figures from mythology or imagination. Although information on the instigators is somewhat scarce, we know that the company was founded in 1872 as Bottentruit et Plisson, then from 1886 to 1898 it was known only as Plisson. In 1898 Plisson's chief designer, Hartz, became his partner, resulting in the change to Plisson et Hartz until Plisson's death in 1904. The company then continued under the name Hartz et Cie. Hartz was said to be the imaginative source of the distinctive chimeric designs. Snakewood shaft. Hallmarked 18k gold and Georges Plisson and Hartz, Paris, France circa 1900.
