About the Item

Sculpted in sunk relief, this superb sandstone carving features a pharaoh facing right, wearing a broad collar and either the Red Crown or Double Crown fronted by a uraeus. He presents a Sbt (clepsydra or water clock) to a goddess, of which only her lily-topped scepter is preserved to the right. The Sbt is represented as a baboon seated against an obelisk, and we can see the bases of two cartouches preserved above. Notes The Sbt offering is mainly presented to goddesses, primarily lioness-headed ones. The lily-topped scepter is also associated with lioness-headed goddesses (see T. Handoussa, "A propos de l'offrande Sbt," Studien zur Altägyptischen Kultur 7). Provenance Galerie Antiker Kunst, Hamburg, 1977. Private European Collection. Christie's Antiquities New York, June 5, 2014. Private Collection, Los Angeles California.
