Ancient Greek Apulian Red-Figure Ceramic Pottery Bottle, 4th Century B.C.

About the Item

A particularly finely painted ancient Greek Apulian red-figure bottle, dating to the 4th century B.C. A classically elegant form, sitting on a disc base, with a squat piriform body rising to a narrow neck and everted trumpet-like rim. The central register with a charming scene; a lady of fashion is shown seated wearing a chiton, the folds of the cloth hang loosely about her legs. Adorned with a diadem in her hair and bracelets on her wrists; she holds out an offering plate somewhat distractedly whilst staring wistfully into the mirror held in her other hand. Opposite her stands a nude Eros, with his great outstretched wings behind, he wears nothing but beads across his chest, anklets, bracelets and a diadem. He reaches down to feed the small goose waiting patiently below him, its neck outstretched eagerly awaiting its meal; a ribbon hangs in the background. With palmettes adorning the field opposite and bordered below by a wave motif. This is a beautifully painted vessel of comparatively rare form; the scene is engaging, in particular the evocative little goose, which, though small, seems to draw the attention of the viewer. Scenes on Greek pottery were often recycled, and thus the occasional addition of animals always adds a further sense of life and energy. Indeed there seems to be a greater freedom about the depiction of animals, perhaps it was because the painters were taking inspiration from the natural world they saw around them. Geese were popular pets in ancient Greece; in the Odyssey for instance, Penelope, who waited at Ithaca for twenty years while her husband Odysseus struggled to return home was kept company by a flock of geese to help ease her heart. Her geese, similar to the animal shown here, are just two examples of the importance of pets to the ancient Greeks. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection, Frankfurt, Germany. Buying throughout the 1980’s – 1990’s, with his keen eye Lohrey formed one of the leading German collections of its type.

Though much of the original piece has been lost, the subtle anatomical detail in the feet mark this out as a piece of exceptional quality, and the work of an artist of particular talent and patience - as Johann Winckelmann once said of the famous Belvedere Torso, ''if you contemplate this with a quiet eye [...] the god will at once become visible in this stone.'' This fragment once caught the eye of Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle (1694-1758), a Knight of the Garter and among the most prolific collectors of his day.
