Spanish Colonial Madonna and Child
Peru or Bolivia, late 18th – early 19th century
A finely carved Andean polychrome wood figure of the Virgin and Child, the Virgin shown in a characteristic conical form with richly decorated red and gold mantle and serene expression, holding the Child close to her chest. Retaining original painted surface with age-consistent wear and traces of gilding. Mounted on an old stepped wooden base.
Height: _39__ cm
Condition: Expected surface wear and minor losses consistent with age.
An evocative example of devotional art from the Spanish Colonial period, reflecting the distinctive folk-baroque style of the Cusco and Potosí schools
