About the Item

This 21-inch (56 cm) tall cast iron doorstop is an authentic piece of early twentieth-century Americana, modelled after the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. Cast iron doorstops were common decorative items in U.S. households during the Art Deco period, but this example is unusually tall and weighing over 3.6 kg. This substantial size suggests it may have originally been used as a commercial shop display rather than solely for domestic use. The actual lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, known for its iconic black and white spiral design, or "daymark," first applied in 1873 to help sailors navigate the dangerous waters off the coast known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic". The doorstop itself features highly detailed casting, including a three-dimensional lantern room with intact railings and an octagonal keeper's cottage at the base. It is hollow-backed and remains structurally sound and stable. The piece retains its original hand-painted finish, showing authentic signs of age, including surface rust and some paint flaking, which contributes to its overall character and history as a genuine antique. This is a rare find for enthusiasts of nautical folk art or industrial casting and is suitable for both indoor display and garden use. Dimensions: Width: 22.5cm Depth: 11cm Height: 56cm
