About the Item

This extraordinary cabinet is a rare piece of Italian craftsmanship, hailing from Cortina d'Ampezzo in the early 1900s. Completely covered in dark, meticulously nailed bark, it showcases the skill and precision required to preserve the integrity of each piece without breakage—an exceptional feat in itself. The lower section features a door with hidden storage, while the upper section is adorned with two shelves, crowned by a fantastical animal's head, complete with original mercury eyes that add a magical touch. More than just a functional piece of furniture, this cabinet is deeply embedded in the folkloric beliefs of its time, designed not only as a storage unit but also as a talisman against evil spirits. The custom barkwork reflects a reverence for local traditions, with the jamb of the shelves engraved with initials—either of the craftsman who created it or the family it belonged to, adding a personal and historical significance.
