About the Item

Late 19th century American "straight stick" wooden cane with a "sterling" silver (marked at the base of the collar; see image) "dome top" collar; planished and mounted to the handle. The wood appears to be bird's eyemaple having grain and markings typifying that wood. The circular wooden shaft of the cane starts at 1" diameter at the top tapering down to 3/4" diameter at the bottom where the bone material ferrel is still intact and all original, albeit there is some wear to it (see images). It should be noted that most 19th century walking sticks were used as fashion statements just as often as for orthopedic utility; selecting them with the same emphasis as if they were choosing a hat to wear. There was even an individual style and gait that users employed in carrying and walking with their canes. The walking stick is in completely original condition and can still be used or simply put on display with a premium collection of canes. Dimensions: 1 3/8" diameter at the top x 34 1/2" total height Collar length is 2" Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations.
