This 19th Century rare Indian Oomersi Mawji, hand-crafted silver round tray is an exquisite work of craftsmanship. The tray depicts Hindu deities within four medallions typical of Kutch work from the region. The tray bears the makers mark "O.M BHUJ" for Oomersi Mawji, court silversmith to the ruler of Kutch, Maharao Shri Mirza Raja Sawai Khengarji Bahadurno, is recognised as India’s premier silversmiths from the late nineteenth century. They were the first Indian silversmiths to stamp their pieces (usually with the letters ‘OM’), and retailed in upscale stores such as Liberty’s in Regent Street, and Proctor and Co., Oxford Street, London. The plate features four Hindu deities delicately depicted within individual ovals. Each deity is rendered with precision and artistic finesse, capturing the essence of Hindu religious iconography. The representation of these deities not only serves a religious purpose but also exemplifies the syncretic cultural milieu of Gujrat. The entire surface of the plate is fully repoussé, a metalworking technique where the silver is hammered and shaped from the reverse side to create intricate designs on the front. The repoussé work on this plate is not only a testament to the skill of the artisan but also adds depth and texture to the overall aesthetic. Floral and geometric motifs, characteristic adorn the plate, creating a visually stunning and harmonious composition. The floral patterns may include blossoming flowers, vines, and leaves, showcasing nature's beauty.
