About the Item
This light blue glass jar from the Roman period features beautifully executed ribbons that gently swirl around the body of the jar. It has a rounded body, narrowing into a thick neck, and a wide, flat mouth with a tall up turned rim. The base is slightly inverted on the underside of the vessel for stability.
Notes
During the Roman period, a variety of glass vessel types came into use. Short, round-bodied Roman glass jars such as the present example, likely held non-pourable substances such as balm. Several jars similar to this one appeared in archaeological excavations along with physician’s tools. This suggests that the balms contained in these jars were used for medicinal purposes.
