About the Item
Hazelnut wood walking stick handle, designed and crafted by Franz Karl Delavilla. The finely carved caricature depicts an enraged man, powerfully modeled, with malicious eyes, an aquiline nose, and a wide mouth and bared teeth. His cap wraps around the high-relief handle, forming the massive grip and the butt, carved with descending concentric circles. The lower part of the handle is carved in bas-relief with dotted scales in the shape of a crest. The initials "FKD" (for Franz Karl Delavilla) are engraved. The handle is made of Malacca wood. Silver band with the OD (Oscar Julius Dietrich) hallmark, Austria, circa 1915.
Delavilla (1884–1967) was a renowned Austrian graphic artist, designer, set designer, and art teacher. He joined the Wiener Werkstätte in 1907 and, over the course of a long and prolific career, designed jewelry, clothing, theater sets, posters, and illustrated books, as well as teaching art classes. In 1942, the Nazis
classified his art as "degenerate" and forced him to resign. In the final decades of his life, Delavilla was awarded the Order of Merit, 1st Class, the Medal of Honor of the
City of Frankfurt, and the Goethe-Plakette of the Landes Hessen. His works are held in museums such as the Metropolitan Museum and the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts.
Oscar Julius Dietrich (1853–1940) was a prominent creator of fine Viennese Art Nouveau objects at the turn of the 20th century. His father, Julius Willheim Dietrich, founded his firm in Vienna in 1848, where he learned his skills as a goldsmith. At the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, he exhibited trophies, belt buckles, walking sticks, umbrella handles, and niello jewelry, for which he was well known. Dietrich generally executed the designs of others, being closely associated with the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte and realizing designs by Josef Hoffmann, Otto Prutscher, and Dagobert Peche.
