The 'Bajra' Peacock Boat, Thames Festival, London, 2003 Black pool Illuminations, 2005 Measures: 175cm height, 107cm depth, 84cm width. Bulbs approximate 2cm width each This monumental peacock head was originally part of the 'Bajra' peacock boat, commissioned by The Mayor Of London For The Thames Festival, London, 2003. The peacock boat was the centerpiece for the Thames festival. It travelled along the banks of the river Thames as part of a mile long 'River Of Light' The boat took 10 people over 2 months to make in the town of Chandannagar, West Bengal, India. It was made in 16 parts, shipped, then re-assembled in London The Curator Nandita Palchoudhuri Oversaw The Design And Construction Of The Bajra Under Sridhar Das Small cellophane wrapped bulbs were handstitched to the specially designed metal framework. The complete boat was 7 meters long, 5m high and used over 135,000 bulbs to illuminate Due to such a great reception the Bajra received in 2003, it prompted the Thames festival to display the peacock boat in London, so that many more Londoners could view the spectacle. The Bajra was exhibited to the public on 17th and 18th September 2003 in the jubilee gardens as a static installation near the London eye. Soon after the peacock boat was transported to black pool to be displayed as a special exhibit as part of the 125 years of the black pool illuminations in 2005. We understand this could be the only remaining part of the boat, after fire destroyed most of it, the head was saved This is a truly historical piece of Indian craftsmanship by Skilled Artisans, with Great Provenance The peacock no longer illuminates, this is for decorative purposes only as the wiring and bulbs would not be safe There are some bulb losses due to age and wear More photographs on request.
