Early 20th century carved wood and papier mâché Jeu de Massacre This lot is a rare and original French fairground artifact, known as a Jeu de Massacre (knock down target). This item comes in the form of a man, in its complete original form. The item is made from a papier mâché head which is hand painted, the hands and legs are made from hand carved wood. The cloths this item is wearing are also completely original and true to its age. The silk / cotton embroider jacket and trousers are made bespoke and very detailed as the photos show. The reverse of the item also has its original hinge which would have been screwed onto a pole to allow the item to be knocked down and perched upon. This item would have originally sat next to another 6 to 12 similar characters as part of a knock down game. The items is rare is due to its condition and complete original form, Items of this (papier mâché) form were very badly damaged and repaired however this particular item is in the best condition we have owned, the buyer will not be disappointed by its presence or fantastic condition, a true collector’s item. These items are in overall wonderful original condition without any breaks or damage. Rare to market because of its subject matter and look. The Jeu de Massacre was a common game in French fairgrounds modelled on local or national figures or enemies. They were hinged on a platform and balls were thrown to knock them down. They are becoming harder to find in such good condition as this item. The items are completely in original condition very decorative and artistic in appearance and hold a very nostalgic visual effect. Dimensions: H 17” x W 3” x D 3.5” Condition: The item is completely solid and structurally sound, it’s weathered and worn with a great patina and colour as shown in the photos provided. The paint shows cracking across the face but is firm and very secure. The hinges show signs of rust also as you would expect. Great overall condition for an item of this age and use a super rare and decorative piece of Folk Art fairground history.
