About the Item
This vintage hand carved and hand painted Tiger, is presumed to have been made in or near Chilapa, Guerrero in circa 1940 in a Folk Art style. The carving has been made in a naive style and has been hand painted in detail.
A highly decorative and unusual example "Tigre de Chilapa" where every August the streets are flooded with tigers as part of the "Tigrada" parade, in which the townspeople celebrate this ancient tradition.
This carnival of cats has deep roots associated with Mesoamerican mythology and rituals designed to invoke Tepeyollotl, the Jaguar God and protector of the mountains, to ensure fertile earth and abundance of rainfall.
