Rare Pair of 19th Century European Carousel Horse Sculptures

About the Item

These hand-carved wooden European carousel horses have a proud carriage, muscular body and an animated expression. Attributed to Friedrich Heyn, a leading carver of carousel horses of the late 19th century world, they depict the Lipizzan breed. They show a head held high, neck arched, nostrils flared, and ears pointed forward. The bridles are jeweled, the eyes are glass, and the tails are real horse hair. The backs of the saddles have a rear carved double-headed eagle with jeweled eyes, the symbol of the Hapsburgs. There is a Hapsburg family crest on a breast plate of one horse while the other horse has a breast plate of Unknown origin to us. There are old holes drilled for attaching the horses to a carousel but no poles other than the ones supporting the horses to the floor. These magnificent carousel horses were most likely carved in Germany or Austria. Early Provenance state these were created for the Vienna International Exposition of 1873. Authentic and well-preserved 19th century carousel horses are rare, and pairs are extremely hard to find. Another notable feature is that the horses have some jewels on their inner sides. Due to limited resources of many producers, most wooden carousel horses had jewels only visible on the outer side. There is a rich history about the Lipizzan horse breed and carousels in general, dating back up to one thousand years (carousels-originally used in jousting and cavalry training before transitioning to the use of pleasure/amusement). These two wonderfully carved antique horses will be an attribute to any collection.
