About the Item

A beautifully designed and gorgeously earth-toned glazed plate by famed Mexican-American California studio art potter Dora De Larios. De Larios was born in Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents. She grew up in the artistic Silver Lake district near downtown Los Angeles amongst Mexican and Nisei Japanese immigrants. As a result, De Larios was heavily influenced by ancient American, Hispanic, and Japanese ceramics. In the 1950s, De Larios studied artists Otto and Vivika Heino as well as Susan Peterson at the University of Southern California where she graduated with a major in ceramics in 1957. In the 1960s, artist impresario Millard Sheets hired De Larios, along with other notable ceramists including Harrison McIntosh and Jerry Rothman, to design tiles for the Franciscan Ceramics division of Interpace in Los Angeles. De Larios has been featured in more than 50 one-person gallery shows, group invitational shows, and juried museum exhibitions across the United States. Her works can be found in numerous collections and museums including the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, the Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C., the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The plate is signed by De Larios on the base. Would be a great addition to any collectors of De Larios' work/ Mid-century Modern ceramics or gorgeous eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. Approximate dimensions: 1" High, 8" wide, 7.25" deep.
