About the Item

"Kamalu hai (Snake Canoe) II" by Taukana Regui Wauja, 2024 This handbuilt ceramic sculpture by Taukana Regui Wauja, an Indigenous artist from the Wauja community in Brazil’s Xingu Territory, embodies the spiritual and symbolic power of the snake-canoe archetype. The zoomorphic form, standing on four legs, merges the features of a serpent and a canoe — sacred entities in Wauja cosmology. Handcrafted with local clay and natural pigments, its painted motifs are derived from ancestral Wauja graphic language. The pronounced head, dorsal details, and organic curves express movement and transformation, evoking the mythic creatures that navigate between worlds. More than decorative, this work preserves cultural memory while asserting a vital, contemporary Indigenous presence in ceramic art.
