About the Item
A fantastic, exceptionally rare large hand-carved Herters (Herter's) Company black swan decoy sculpture that features a beautiful, natural wood grain patina that comes with age. This piece has a wonderful classic shape and finely carved texture (notice how the textures changes from one side of the swans head to the other).
Per the previous owner, this piece was somehow never painted white (it has not been stripped or taken down) like the other carved swans and thus might be an only, one of kind dark black swan produced at the Herters Company (which was founded in the 1930s in Waseca, Minnesota by George Herter.) Possibly the only one to ever leave the factory.
Swan decoys are fairly uncommon. This piece is extraordinarily so. The swan has a great feel and heft to it. Would be a great addition to any folk art decoy collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent piece in about any setting.
