Created and used from the late 19th century into the 20th century, Dan passport masks served as personal talismans with spiritual connection and as portable identification symbol representing the carrier's familial connections when traveling between communities. Just small enough to be carried or worn, the masks were hand carved from wood and stained with natural brown or black dyes.
