About the Item

A large and powerfully carved Ceremonial Mask from New Guinea. In mineral paints with Cowrie Shell Eyes. Collected in Kaminabit, Middle Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea. The Mei is the ancestral guardian of the junior grade society, but it is used in all ceremonial occasions. It is attached to the Tumbuan, a large basketry dance costume. This particular mask has the iconography of a Zoomorphic Being (combining a human and a bird) signifying the mask's ability to communicate with the spirit world. The Mask was fitted with hanging blocks at a later time. Dimensions: 9"W x 5"D x 37"H Condition: Very good original condition with only acceptable age-related wear including expected slight paint losses which do not detract from the powerful and authentic presentation.
