About the Item

A delightful pair of 1928 campaign pitchers made for the Hoover–Smith presidential contest. Each pitcher is molded as a caricatured portrait: Herbert Hoover is rendered with a dramatic, shortened body and a stern, squat pose — hands planted on his knees — emphasizing his gravitas; Alfred E. Smith is shown with a friendly, toothy smile, kind eyes and laugh lines, his hands clasped around his knees as if engaged in conversation. The contrast in expressions and posture creates immediate visual charm and period satire, making these a memorable example of early 20th-century political ceramics. Both pitchers are clearly marked on the base “Gold Medal China, Made in U.S.A.” and each bears a facsimile of the candidate’s signature on the reverse. Produced under the Patriotic Products Association imprint, these figural wares were intended as popular, mass-market souvenirs for the 1928 campaign and remain desirable to both political memorabilia collectors and lovers of vernacular ceramics. The 1928 election, Republican Herbert Hoover versus Democrat Alfred E. Smith, was a culturally significant race (Smith was the first Catholic major-party presidential nominee), and campaign souvenirs from that year (pins, ribbons, ceramics, printed ephemera) are actively collected. Figural ceramics such as these were inexpensive to produce yet resonant with voters and households of the period, and today they offer a charming window into the visual culture of political campaigning in the 1920s. Originally intended as both souvenir and utilitarian ware, the pitchers will function as decorative pitchers or vases; they make excellent display pieces on a shelf, bar, or mantel and are wonderful conversation starters. The sculptural caricature work, glossy glaze and expected age crazing lend them authenticity and old-world appeal.

By Sarreguemines
Located in Red Lion, PA
A rare and exceptionally handsome 1920s Majolica character mug by Sarreguemines, France, depicting a youthful Napoleon Bonaparte in vibrant color and exquisite detail. This beautifully modeled mug captures Napoleon with piercing gray eyes, a crisp red and green military uniform, and his iconic bicorne hat, rendered in classic French Majolica glaze. Sarreguemines, one of France’s most renowned faience and Majolica manufacturers, produced some of the most refined and expressive examples.
