About the Item
The Generale pendant by Enrico Baj is a rare and compelling example of the artist’s work translated into a wearable object. Produced in a limited and signed edition, the pendant belongs to Baj’s well-known Generals series, developed from the 1950s onwards. In this body of work, military figures are rendered as inflated and absurd caricatures, forming part of a broader critique of authority, hierarchy, and militarised power in the post-war and Cold War era. By employing unconventional materials and a playful, almost irreverent aesthetic, Baj subverted the traditional visual symbols associated with command and prestige.
Enrico Baj was an Italian artist, writer, and anarchist thinker, as well as a co-founder of the Nuclear Art movement. Throughout his career, he consistently challenged conformity, nationalism, and the aesthetics of power through irony and satire. The Generale pendant demonstrates how these ideas extended beyond painting and collage into objects intended to be worn and collected. It stands today as both a distinctive example of jewellery and a concise expression of Baj’s enduring political and artistic stance.
