50-Star American flag, Flown over the U.S. Capitol on the Day 50-Star Flags Became Official, 1960 Presented is a cotton, machine-sewn flag with 50 stars. This flag was flown over the Capitol of the United States on July 4, 1960, the day the 50-star flag became the official flag of our country to celebrate Hawaii gaining statehood. The blue canton features 50 embroidered stars in a row pattern of 6/5/6/5/6/5/6/5/6. The fly consists of 13 machine-sewn red and white stripes. The hoist has two metal grommets. At the bottom of the hoist is an ink inscription that reads, “Presented by Congressman Neal Smith.” At the top of the hoist is a stamped logo for the flag maker, Bull Dog Bunting. Flag is presented with the original maker’s Bull Dog Bunting cardboard box. Flag is authenticated by a typed letter to Congressman Neil Smith certifying the flag flew over the Capitol on July 4, 1960 from the then Architect of the Capitol, J. George Steward.
