About the Item

This Folk Art cane or walking stick is completely unmarked, but presumed to have been made in the United States in circa 1920 in the Folk Art style. The handle of the cane is a lacquered piece of burled wood that may have been intended to resemble an animal given the apparent drilled holes on either side where eyes would be. There is no other indication by way of carving of ears or mouth etc., to give any further evidence of the artist's intention, but in some respects, the handle does present as a stylized animal head. The burled handle is crafted to a straight shaft of possibly hickory which was painted black.
