About the Item
A pair of folk art hand carved canes or walking sticks and a small stick by Joseph Deveau (1901-1999). Deveau lived most of his life in Essex, MA., but was originally from Nova Scotia. His work, though uniquely American, shows the distinct influence of the French Canadian tradition of “en bois” woodcarving and folk art embellishment. Deveau crafted his furniture and other carvings each evening over several decades during the mid 20th century, All of his pieces were painstakingly constructed from single pine logs and decorated with a variety of chip carved motifs including hearts, diamonds, horseshoes, starbursts and other fine details. Many were created as gifts for his wife and bear dedications to her.
There are part of a museum quality collection of handcrafted objects acquired directly from the artist's estate.
One measures 39" long with a 5" handle, the other is 43" long. The extra stick is 13.5" long. One is dated both 1924 and 1953.
