About the Item
This is an authentic "used" Martin Bird House which was used to attract Martin birds to nest, because of their propensity to eat and consume insects such as mosquitoes, moths, and beetles. Martin birds are migratory birds related to the Swallow family and nest in the spring in the north eastern United States. They would have inhabited the house seasonally, and several Martin bird families could have lived in this same house because of the multiplicity of entrances and because of the wall divisions of the interior. Several original glass panes still front five of the windows.
This bird house was found in an estate in upstate New York in the 1970s. Judging by the paint, the wood construction, and method of acquisition and discussions with the family, I date this Martin Bird House to the late 1920s. The barn wood base is tongue and grooved and may have been from either floor boards or siding at one time (see image). An iron or metal perch bar for birds to rest on, surrounds the perimeter of the structure. This bar is connected by six small posts attached to the base. Two barn wood type wood blocks make up the construction of the chimneys. The house is in original hand painted green paint, with an original white undercoat. The roof maintains its original brown paint. There are remnants of old bird's nests inside the two upper end windows, indicating that the bird house was used at some point in time (see images).
While still serviceable in the garden for attracting birds, I have chosen to display it indoors as a piece of Folk Art to preserve it's original integrity. The bird house is a nice, large Size; it is substantial, sturdy, well built, and in excellent all original condition. This Martin Bird House is a representative piece of Americana and a wonderful example of American Folk Art.

Vintage Children
s Toy Savings Bank "U.S. Mail". American, Circa 1920
By A.C. Williams Company
Located in Incline Village, NV
Children's Savings Coin Bank "U.S. Mail" bank , also known as a "still bank"; was American made, circa 1920. This is well made, sturdy, and all original. It is made of cast iron and hand painted in original green paint with gold highlighting. There is no repaint and no restoration.
The coins were deposited through the "letter depository"; lift the lever and drop in a coin (see image). When the bank is full, coins are removed by undoing the original square nut in back and the screw in front. Cast into two parts and now separated, the coins are easily collected. Put back together again to insure parts don't go missing (which happened often) and original screw and nut are maintained.
This bank was manufactured circa 1920 by the A.C. Williams Company, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. They made many cast iron toys, banks and other products during their time of operation until World War II.
The "U.S. Mail" bank is referenced on page 102 #853 in "The Penny Bank Book" by Andy and Susan Moore...

Staffordshire Cottage Still Bank, English, circa 1880
By Staffordshire
Located in Incline Village, NV
Very attractive and well-made decorative and colorful Staffordshire porcelain money box or savings bank; made in England, indicative of the style potters from that region employed, circa 1880. Nicely detailed with green floral facie, orange double pane windows and front door, and a white painted cottage with brown steps and green fauna at entry. There were no "coin traps" or provisions for coin removal so banks such as these are rare since smashing or breaking the bank was the only method by which the money could be retrieved.
The bank is in very good all original condition with only a minor "hairline" repair to one of the chimney stacks (see image). It is very sound and done a long time ago and is hardly noticeable.
Being a cross collectible, this would be a very unique addition for a Staffordshire collector indeed (the subject being a money box), or a welcome compliment to any still bank...
